It aims to improve the quality of life in cities, strengthen social inclusion, foster innovation and promote sustainable solutions to urban challenges.

It encourages cooperation between local actors, municipal authorities, community organizations and other stakeholders to design and implement innovative projects, as well as develop their capacities and knowledge.

UIE covers a wide range of thematic areas, such as local economic development, sustainable mobility, urban renewal, access to affordable housing, energy transition, etc. affordable housing, energy transition, creation of green spaces, promotion of culture and heritage, as well as initiatives to encourage citizen participation.

To better understand the opportunities and support available to help cities innovate, strengthen their knowledge, and develop and implement integrated urban strategieses, the European Commission in France offers an overview of the European Urban Initiative and how it contributes to more balanced, inclusive and sustainable urban development.
